spice bowl, the suribachi is a mortar with serrations which assist in the grinding/cutting action when crushing spices, seeds and many other food items. A hardwood pestle [surikogi] is always used rather than a ceramic pestle. This is to help prevent rounding or smoothing the serrations which helps to maintain the cutting action. Each suribachi comes with a pestle.
